This talk was a long-standing tradition at MIT.

A packed audience listened very carefully to the exceptional teacher they had.

Presented each January, the session meant to teach a few heuristic rules that anyone can use to improve their speaking abilities in critical situations.

It was one of the best findings for me from Youtube. 🍰

To this day, in my whole life.

Maybe the best.

So, there is no way I’m not going to share it with all of you wonderful people. 😊

Patrick Henry Winston (February 5, 1943 — July 19, 2019) was an American computer scientist and professor at the MIT. To say the least, he was one of the best lecturers in the world.

All in all, there is a reason his courses are the all most clicked ones in MIT OpenCourseWare.

Here is the absolute summarized version of the lecture, that is also down below.

Your success in life will be determined largely by your ability to speak, your ability to write and the quality of your ideas.

The quality of your communication, for speaking or writing, is largely determined by this formula.

It’s a matter of how much knowledge 📗 you have, how much you practice 🎯 with that knowledge, and your inherent talent 🔮.

Notice that the T is very small.

What really matters is what you know.

Well, thank you for the formula Dr. Winston. 👀

What can we do right now for our daily interactions? 🤔

In order to have a complete conversation with someone, we need 3 things:

  • How to Start
  • How to Express
  • How to End.

How To Start

An empowerment promise.

What is our intention to initiate the conservation, how are we going to enrich the life of the being that is listening to us?

Making it clear is crucial.

How To Express Yourself

Cycle around your ideas so they can understand you more deeply. Using different words to connect varying dots in his/her mind.

Tell it in a million different ways. Okay, maybe not million. (Source: Giphy)

Build a fence around your idea. So they know, what is your specific & personal perspective on the topic.

Okay but, what is YOUR idea? (Source: giphy)

Wave with your tone of voice, so you can keep the attention at a optimum for the lifetime of the interaction.

The toneeeee. (Source: giphy)

How To End

Maybe, tell a joke, as now they know your verb selection as well as they are comfortable with your body language.

Salute the listener, tell how much you valued their time.

Because it’s priceless.

Takeaway

Speaking is important. It’s a vital part of our communication.

Weirdly, we don’t really think about how we can improve it.

Even more strangely, some people think this is about becoming more successful in business and having more money.

Well, it has nothing to do with money, it has everything to do becoming rich.

Like Coco Chanel says:

We can pretty much become richer, for free.

With meaningful connections, with wonderful people around us. Just gotta learn how.

Take care. 🙃
