How to Get the Job You’ve Always Dreamed Of, And More
Once upon a time, a rich man asked an old, wise man to help his son change his bad habits. The old man asked his son to take a walk with him through the garden.
The wise man stopped after a few steps and asked the kid to pluck a small flower. He easily plucked out the plant with his fingers.
They continued walking as the wise man nodded.
They stopped again a few seconds later and the wise man pointed to another plant, slightly larger than the last. With a little effort, he grabbed it by the hand and pulled it from the ground.
“Now pluck that one out” the wise man said, pointing at a bush.
With both of his hands, the young man grabbed the bush and, using all of his strength, just about pulled it out of the ground.
As they continued their walk, wise man asked:
“You see that little tree there, right? Try to remove that one.”
The young man tried desperately to move the trunk by grabbing it with both hands and pulling as hard as he could.
“Master, it’s impossible. I can’t do it.
“You see, dear boy, our habits are the same. It gets harder and harder for us to remove them if we allow them to grow and establish roots.”
Maybe the best quote I’ve heard about habits is from Matthias Alexander:
“People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures.”
That makes sense right? Clearly this is a reason to try to acquire good habits.
If we got the why down, how about the how?
See, our brain is a wonderful machine, sending signals to us. If we are somewhat healthy, we can tell whenever we are hungry.
We feel like, “Man, I gotta eat something.”. And we don’t feel upset or angry to our self right? It is the most normal thing to feel hunger as a human.
Same with thirst. Just drink a gallon of water and you are good to go.
This idea changes for some reason, whenever we feel stuck; bored or lonely, we think they are some kind of bad situations.
However they are simply signals too.
Maybe you want a better job because you feel stuck. You like the idea of making more money.
There is possibly, 3 problems you might have to solve.
- Industry (your positioning needs improvement)
- Skill Set (what you offer isn’t valuable enough)
- Traffic (you’re not telling enough people)
Maybe you’d like to have more understanding people around you, people that stretch your thinking and want the best for you.
You want to hangout with people of whom you value. Go where they are at.
If you are lonely, you might be seeking connections. Reading is a great way to keep your mind moving.
Feeling stuck, bored, under thinking and trapped are all just signals. That you can and need to do something other that what you are used to.
Just listen to yourself. Your brain is telling you all you need.
